When bombs were dropped on Kosovo, this event’s tone needed to change. I was hired by the State Department, based on my work at Ketchum, to develop the Safeguarding Freedom theme with an emphasis on past successes in a world of change. The United States had the only material at the summit that did not feature soldiers or weapons. I remember well the uneasiness I felt in the pit of my stomach as the other countries gathered, asking myself, “Did I create the right tone?” Bill Clinton felt that I captured his thoughts exactly, as the world press covering the event got his message right.
