Pam, I love "People let their freak flag fly."

I chose three of the favorite emails home of the past year to go with this. Did you read "Say What?"

What a lovely, descriptive and juicy post! I feel like I've tasted the flavor of English small-town life.

What is it about an island? Right now, I'm on Martha's Vineyard and found so many droll similarities to your observations. We are Latitude: 41.416 N Longitude: -70.616 W, and it's really throwing me off from the DC day-night hours I'm used to. The birds start singing around 4 and the sunrise starts at 4:15 am. The long days last until around 8. But winter, like you've experienced is the Great Dark. Sunset starts around 3:30-4 and it's tremendously oppressive. I've noticed pages of Twelve Step Programs in the newspapers! People just can't deal with it. Also, our MV island encourages eccentricity. People let their freak flag fly. And, like England, people are expert in all sorts of odd things. Just this week someone gave a detailed talk and slide show about otters! I love island living and feeling cut off, too. But, yes, there are hardships. Getting anything shipped to the island is an adventure. For instance, Apple won't ship to a P.O. box. Well, practically everyone here has a P.O. box. It took about 45 minutes to solve the problem...had to contact a local shipping company with a street address to accept my new computer! Oh, well. As long as I'm not in a rush, things get sorted out and it encourages creativity! Big box store shopping just doesn't exist here...lots of tiny businesses, farms and even a local brewer, too! And, like your place, people are passionate about gardening. The climate is SUPERB!
Oh, dear...I'm set to go home day after tomorrow. But we return in August for 10 whole weeks!
